If you haven’t seen the season finale episode of The Walking Dead, don’t worry this recap contains no spoilers – simply because there is nothing to spoil.
Every year AMC goes hard with the lead up to TWD finale and this year was no different. Every article, every interview, every preview was amping us up for something horrific, something that would change the entire series FOREVER.
Well, that didn’t happen, so here’s what did:
The season finale was 90 minutes long, and you can imagine that I was counting down the minutes to see who would be the first character to die.
Carol and Morgan
Carol has a run in with a group of many Saviours, things get a little hostile when they shoot at Carol’s car. She has to put on the tricks and begs for mercy. While they laugh at her, she pulls up the gun in her sleeve and lights them up killing most of them. There’s one straggler that isn’t dead yet, and he manages to stab her before she can get away.A few minutes later, we see the man in the truck who was shot in the shoulder, but he seems to be on Carol’s tail, following her through the entire episode. Morgan and Rick roll up a few minutes later and check out the scene. They follow Carol’s tracks so it’s basically this cat and mouse chase through the episode until Rick and Morgan have to split up. Morgan wants to keep looking for her and Rick knows he needs to get back.
Morgan keeps pushing forward, but the man slowly chasing Carol catches up to her and shoots her down. He’s basically about to kill her, he’s already put one bullet into her arm and knee. He stands over her, but obviously Morgan catches up, and with the gun that Rick handed to him earlier, shoots the man a couple of times. And so there, Morgan’s entire inner struggle comes full circle. Thankfully, it looks like Carol will make it, two good looking men on horses ride up and offer to help Carol (Morgan let this man live just moments before).
Rick and The Crew
Maggie is having some pregnany issues and she needs a doctor asap.Rick and the crew (Carl, Abe, Sasha, Maggie, Eugene and Aaron) pack up the trailer to head to the hilltop to visit the doctor.
(Side note: They’ve had all this time to prepare for Maggie and the baby, why couldn’t anyone start to or attempt to learn more about child birth and it’s complications.Or better yet, how about you don’t send out the only doctor you have on random missions! They have the medication, they have a good set up to be able to take care of her. Instead they pack up the trailer and leave Alexandria even when they know Negan is watching, AND half the crew is missing? Like it didn’t make any sense.
Even having half the crew leave with Daryl was so stupid. So random and so stupid, when you should be preparing, you guys are just off doing random ass missions because Daryl ‘needed some air’. They all made really stupid decisions this season, and I feel like our characters should be a little more savvy with the world they live in at this point. )
Anyways, they soon realize that all the roads leading to the hilltop are blocked by Negan and his crew. The first two roads were blocked by parked cars and armed Saviours, and so the crew back up the truck and try to find another route. They get to a road that has a bunch of zombies chained together but wearing the clothes from Michonne, Glenn, etc. They get shot at from a far, and have enough time to make it back to the trailer to find another road. Now that other road is blocked with a bunch of tree logs and someone sets it on fire, and Rick’s running back to the trailer once more. It starts to get dark now and Eugene has a somewhat great idea. He decides he’s going to drive the van but have everyone else run through the woods. The idea seems smart at first, but obviously there’s 10 minutes left in the episode and sh** still needs to hit the fan. As they’re running through the woods, a bunch of lights come on and there’s an overly dragged out shot of all the Saviours standing around with weapons and angry faces.
At this point you just want the episode to end, it’s been almost 90 minutes and not much has happened in this highly anticipated finale that was SO disturbing some actors on the show didn’t even want to show up for work.
So anyways, Rick’s crew is on their knees, and then we see Negan walking out of his trailer like he’s Queen Cersei. Did anyone else notice that? I totally imagined seeing him on this sick ass motorcycle looking all grungy and scary, instead I see this really handsome man in hipster clothing stepping out of a damn trailer as if he’s royalty. And also, his bat didn’t even look that scary. I remember seeing a picture of it in the comics and it’s this huge thick baseball bat with barbed wire wrapped around and blood dripping from it. It was the cleanest baseball bat with a little bit of wire around it.
ANYWAYS, if you can take all that seriously, Negan had the longest monologue ever. It wasn’t even that it was long, he just kept repeating himself. He kept reminding us that someone had to go, someone had to be punished, and then would say ‘but he doesn’t want to kill anyone because he needs everyone to work for him’, and then bla bla but I still need to kill someone. And then with like a minute left he starts playing ‘eenie minee mo’, wow so original, so funny, Negan you’re so funny! And he lands on the person and the screen goes black, blood drips down the screen, and all you hear is the bat bashing into whoever it is – because we don’t get to see who the person is.
And that’s it. Super disappointing season finale. I really don’t know who it is that we’re going to lose next season, I don’t really care who it is at this point, I think the disappointment of that season finale trumps everything else.
